To start the process you have to wait till the ink monitor says the ink cart is very low and then after more use it will come back with a warning the the ink is empty and it wants you to replace that ink cart. So then you take out that exact ink cart, modify it for refilling

2) Using button #1 scroll down untill you see "Diagnostic Mode 00.22.00", then hold down buttons 2 & 3.
3) You now have "Engine Diag Mode Level 4" showing on the display.

The 10 step instructions for re-setting the drum/belt/toner cartridges you suggested for the worked perfectly except for turning the printer on - I unplugged and re-plugged the unit for those steps for my C5400.

The gear turns slowly every time the cartridge is used. When it gets to the end of its range, a spring stops it from turning further and the printer will not print until the cartridge is replaced. When a cartridge is refilled, this flag gear must be reset or printer will think the cartridge is still empty and it will not work. You can also squeeze some extra life out of a used cartridge using this method.

5. The printer printed beautifully afterward.

Reading further, I became convinced that a reset process similar to that used to solve this problem for the Brother 2040 and 7420 models was also required here.With nothing more to go on than responses to my emails from the good people (knuckleheads) at Brother telling me only how to install a new cartridge, I began poking around on my own
